Chris Smalling: A defensive stronghold

Manchester United have got off to a flyer this season in terms of the defense. United is yet to concede a goal in EPL this season, thanks to Chris Smalling and the rest of the back four.
All five players have started every game so far and failed to concede a goal in 270 minutes of Premier League football, which is a record that dates a whole decade.

In particular, Chris Smalling deserves a round of applause for the way he has applied and bettered himself, to come back stronger from that red card against Manchester City last season.

Chris Smalling has made a strong start to the season with Man Utd and feels he is improving as the club's main centre-back.

“That is the case. I have always liked that competition with the striker and obviously Daley (Blind) is not that sort of centre-back who is going to dominate, so it’s a case of I take that mantle on and I am enjoying it,” said Smalling.

What Smalling will be hoping for now is the consistency to perform better and better every week.

“I feel like I am playing well and I am enjoying my football, he said

Manager Louis van Gaal also render praise to the center back but he strongly believes there is room for improvement and that the defender should also try to be attacking minded.

That being said, Daley Blind, Luke Shaw, Matteo Darmian and also Sergio Romero all deserve credit for their performances as well.

Chris Smalling can be liking to Rio Ferdinand and his pattern of bullying strikers in front of goal and then n the opposition goal. United next challenge is against Club Brugge on Wednesday in Belgium and we expect to see some more quality football from Chris and his defensive peers.
